PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Japanese drugmaker Daiichi Sankyo said Monday that it received U.S. regulatory approval for a new formulation of its liquid diabetes drug Welchol that can be mixed with fruit juice and diet soft drinks.

Welchol was first approved in 2009 to be mixed with water. The drug lowers blood sugar and "bad cholesterol" in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is the only drinkable diabetes medication that lowers both measures, according to the company.

More than 25 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, which interferes with the metabolizing of carbohydrates and can cause potentially dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar.
