Avoiding Premature Product Withdrawal

A novel product was introduced without guidance on how to select appropriate patients, discontinue existing OTC medications, or titrate dosage to clinical effect. Soon after launch, serious "adverse events" began to appear, reflecting an exaggeration of the drug's clinical effect, and resulting in hospitalizations, surgery and some fatalities. The product was rapidly withdrawn from the market within months of launch.

A follow-up assessment suggests that, although the product itself was safe and effective, the lack of processes for standardizing use, inability to avoid adverse effects in sensitive patients, and failure to recognize early signs of serious events contributed significantly to the early withdrawal of this product.
